Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic also a speaker who is Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency, a site with videos and comments on the representations of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist over 10 years. She is the founder and director-executive of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit website that explores representations of women within popular media narratives. Aiming to break down the stereotypes about women and pop culture she also works to raise issues related specifically to the harassment of women as well as other classes of people in the online world. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in political and social thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she's highly sought after as she has appeared at TEDxWomenXOXO as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. As a child, Sarkeesian was fascinated by questions of gender identity as well as feminist theories. While still at school in 2009 she created the Feminist Frequency site. A woman who was ambitious had a plan to make a web series focused on how gender is represented within games. Then, she found herself in the middle of an internet harassment campaign. But the assault did not deter her instead it only strengthened her resolve to be a feminist media critic. The award-winning journalist has received numerous accolades in recognition of her many significant contributions to the world of feministism.
